No matter what kind of job you’re seeking, interviewing is always nerve-wracking. It activates fears of public speaking, being under scrutiny, and failing to accomplish what we set our minds to. For residents of our student apartments in Arlington, you might be applying to a job for the very first time, looking for a summer internship, or venturing out into the professional world after officially graduating from UTA.

Luckily, there’s a lot you can do to set yourself up for success in any interview. These five tips can help you put your best foot forward and make a solid impression at your next job interview. So without further ado, let’s dive right into it.

Get Plenty of Sleep

The power of good sleep cannot be overstated when it comes to being at the top of your game both mentally and physically. Getting high-quality sleep is sometimes easier said than done, but do yourself a favor by making sure you’re getting to bed at a good time the night before and giving yourself a good environment to relax and fall asleep in. This is one of the simplest and most overlooked tips for job interviews—you simply perform better when your body has had the chance it needs to feel rejuvenated. Luckily our UTA student housing provides the perfect tranquil environment to promote great sleep!

Dress Professionally, But Comfortably

You should make sure you’ve picked out a good outfit ahead of time—one that signals professionalism and preparedness, but also one that doesn’t make you feel physically uncomfortable. If your pants are too tight, a tag is itchy, or the outfit isn’t warm enough, for example, you’re setting yourself up for unhelpful distractions during the interview process. Not only that but when your body is uncomfortable, so is your mind, making it more difficult to exude the confidence and poise that potential employers tend to respond well to.

Come Prepared

This is perhaps our most important tip—really, it’s a few tips rolled into one. First of all, come prepared with materials; bring a copy of your resume, application, and portfolio, if applicable. That way you can easily refer back to those materials as needed, or you can provide them to an interviewer who didn’t come with a copy themselves, a move that ingratiates yourself to them right off the bat.

Secondly, review the job description before you arrive and think about the questions you’ll likely be asked. Understand what is expected of you in this position and prepare your answers to questions that come up. Speak them aloud if at all possible. You might even practice with a friend or roommate at your UTA student housing.

Thirdly, research the company you’re interviewing for. Interviewers want to see that you’ve done your homework and are excited for this particular position at this particular employer. Read the company website in as much detail as possible and check out their social media pages as well.

Practice Your Body Language

Body language can provide semi-conscious social cues that are hard to ignore, even when we’re not aware we’re paying attention to them. Try to be aware of your body language during an interview process. Walk with confidence, sit up straight, shake hands firmly, and keep your body open while answering questions (e.g. don’t turn away, hunch over, or cross your arms in front of you every time you’re asked a new question).

Ask Questions

Remember, the interview process is meant to help you learn about the position too. Any good interviewer will typically end the interview with “Do you have any questions for me?” Don’t squander this opportunity. While preparing, come up with a few relevant questions like, “What does a typical day in this position look like?” or “Who would I be reporting to?” This shows your genuine interest in the position and helps you determine whether the job really is a good fit for you.
